TDYN-PRO

Integration of ground-based profilers into the DWD forecast system

Although there is a dense network of ground-level observations in Germany and a very good coverage of the occurring precipitation by means of weather radar, the vertical structure of the boundary layer is only recorded selectively in time and space, e.g. by weather balloon ascents or by take-offs and landings of commercial aircraft at larger airports. However, the vertical structure of the boundary layer in terms of temperature, water vapor, and wind is crucial for the development and occurrence of thunderstorms, gusts, fog, etc..

Therefore, TDYN-PRO explores the use of novel ground-based remote sensing sensors that record temperature and water vapor profiles in the lower atmosphere in a punctual but continuous manner. The focus is on microwave radiometers that are already commercially available, and also on future water vapor lidars. The overall goal of this project is to demonstrate the potential of such instruments to improve nowcasting and short-term weather forecasting. Specifically investigated are:
1.) The accuracy and reliability of microwave radiometer systems and their forward models: this will involve error characterization of the measurement systems in collaboration with DWD, which is critical to the data assimilation process.
2.) The influence of the measurements on the short-range forecast: Based on available microwave radiometer data in Germany, first data assimilation experiments will be performed to check whether these systems can have a positive influence on the forecast quality of hazardous weather situations.

Based on the results of TDYN-PRO, DWD can draw conclusions regarding the planning of the future measurement network. Contact: ulrich.loehnert@uni-koeln.de

SPP-PROM

Polarimetric Radar Observations Meet Modelling

Clouds and precipitation processes are still the main source for uncertainties in weather prediction and climate change since decades. With the fusion of radar polarimetry, numerical atmospheric modelling and data assimilation, these uncertainties are reduced by an improved understanding of cloud and precipitation processes. Since 2015, the whole of Germany is covered by 16 polarimetric C-band radars. This, together with the embedded JOYCE, offers an ideal observation infrastructure for research in clouds and precipitation within SPP-PROM.

Stereo-Observation of clouds for validation of Large Eddy Simulations

The development and representation of cloud fields in models is still challenging due to their heterogeneous nature. Using stereo camera observations makes it possible to create 4D observations of cloud fields and their evolution. In synergy with radiation measurements the data will be used to validate models and improve the representation of clouds.
